Can I be a member if I'm not a medical student?

Yes!While clinical activities and participation are geared toward training future ringside physicians, one of the RMN's goals is to increase awareness and advocacy for athlete safety in combat sports. To achieve this goal, it is imperative that all members of the combat sports community are on the same page. It is especially important for the health care team but also extends to coaches, parents, and fans of the sport. We are all responsible for keeping our athletes safe and healthy.Please note that for the majority of combat sports, only physicians with an MD or DO degree and active license can act as Ringside Physicians and practice independently. Other health professions require physician supervision. This varies by state law and local commissions, please check with your local combat sports commission for more information.For the time being, event sign-ups will be open to medical students only but the RMN encourages everyone (e.g., PAs and PA students, RNs, nursing students, NPs, EMS personnel, undergraduate students, etc.) to join and gain exposure to this unique realm of medicine.

Do I have to be a member to participate in events?

Strictly speaking, no, you do not have to be a member of the RMN to participate in USAB events. However, the responsibility of communicating and coordinating with USAB and Ringside Physicians fall directly on you. The RMN takes this burden off of busy students and professionals and has well-established relationships with USAB and Ringside Physicians, making the process of finding and getting access to events much easier.
Membership also gives you access to information and resources to learn more about Ringside Medicine and connects you to the combat sports community.

Do I need prior experience in combat sports or sports medicine to join?

No.Many volunteers attend their first event with no background in either. We welcome anyone interested in learning, observing, and supporting athlete safety.A willingness to be professional, learn, and help when necessary is what we value most.
