No.
Many volunteers attend their first event with no background in either. We welcome anyone interested in learning, observing, and supporting athlete safety.
A willingness to be professional, learn, and help when necessary is what we value most.
You can expect a fast paced, energetic, and fun experience. Think of your typical high school or college sports game, you'll encounter impassioned fans made up of friends and family, former athletes, and athletes excited to compete or cheering on their teammates.
In terms of participation, try to learn as much as you can! Events typically start with pre-bout physicals after weigh-ins.
Under the supervision of the attending Ringside Physician, you may have the opportunity to assist with:
Obtaining vitals
Collecting pertinent history to assess an athlete's readiness
Performing a focused physical exam
During bouts:
Watch athletes closely for signs of distress and note potential areas of concern to address during the post-bout physical
Assist the attending physician for acute injuries or emergencies
Post-bout:
Perform a focused post-bout physical exam
Note: the amount of direct patient contact and level of involvement in pre- and post-bout physicals is at the discretion of the attending Ringside Physician at the event. The RMN cannot guarantee these opportunities but we encourage both our participants and physicians to facilitate hands-on learning to gain the most of the experience.
Expect long days. Events can range from an afternoon and evening to entire days. Some multiday tournaments may have two sessions: morning and afternoon.
You do not have to stay the entire time, but we strongly encourage staying the entire time to make the most of your experience. Let the coordinator for the event know that you have time constraints, and inform the Ringside Physician on the day of.
